TRAVEL TIPS

Bus and Tram Travel

Bus and tram networks are compact but extensive, and service is frequent, with fewer buses nights and on Sunday. Pick up a route map at the tourist office—many stops do not have them. Tickets bought from the driver cost €2.80 for buses and €2 for trams. You can also buy a tourist ticket for unlimited travel on public transportation within the city (€8 one day, €16 three days, €24 five days), or purchase the Travel Card, loaded with an amount or for a time period. Purchase your tickets from the automated machine at stops and stations, rather than onboard, in order to avoid a service charge. Extensive information on routes, fares, and timetables is available from the Helsinki City Transport website.

The Helsinki Kortti (Helsinki Card) allows unlimited travel on city public transportation, free entry to many museums, a free sightseeing tour, and other discounts. It's available for one, two, or three days (€36, €46, or €56, respectively). You can buy it at more than 70 places, including airport information desks, ferry terminals, some hotels and travel agencies, Stockmann's department store, the Hotel Booking Centre, the Helsinki City Tourist office, or online through Helsinki Expert.
